YHA and the Environment

YHA Australia and Sustainability - YHA Australia is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and raising awareness of the benefits of low-impact travel.

There are several green YHA hostels in the Australian network, including hostels at Apollo Bay, the Grampians, Port Douglas, in Melbourne and in the Blue Mountains. But we have a plan to do much more!

How can you help?

Each time you book a bed online, you can choose to contribute $1 towards the fund.

By going green with YHA, you can help us turn our existing properties into eco-friendly hostels and become the greenest hostel network in Australia.

Reduce your carbon footprint at hostels

Did you know that every night you spend in a hostel creates an average of 9,000 grams of carbon emissions? Certified by the Carbon Reduction Institute

YHA has established a Carbon Reduction Program to undertake eco-projects in its hostels, starting with solar hot water systems. Our research shows this to be the area where we can reduce emissions most significantly.

It will also reduce energy costs. We will put all these cost savings back into the scheme to purchase or generate other renewable energy sources.

Saving Energy

While staying at a hostel, it's easy to do your bit for the environment. It's as simple as remembering to turn off the lights, air-conditioning or heating when you leave your room for the day, and not leaving your camera, phone or iPod charging all night. Switch off appliances in the kitchen when you're finished, and choose a cold water cycle on the washing machine in the laundry. If you're cold, don't turn on the heat - put on a jumper! And if it's hot, open the window.

Water Conservation

In a drought-stricken country like Australia, water conservation is extremely important, and you should be sure to take care with our scarce resource. Take shorter showers and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing dishes.

Rubbish

One of the easiest things you can do to help the environment is say No to plastic bags and packaging. Purchase a YHA Enviro bag at reception (may not be available at all hostels) and use it for your groceries and souvenirs. Use biodegradable soaps and laundry powders. Take your rubbish with you - leave only footprints! If you're a smoker, remember to bin your butts.

Always remember to reduce, reuse and recycle!

The Carbon Reduction Institute

The Carbon Reduction Institute, Australia's premium provider of carbon neutral certification for business commends YHA Australia's commitment to the environment, and says:

The Carbon Reduction Institute commends YHA Australia on the setting up of its Hostel Carbon Reduction Fund. In any response, it is important that organisations and people look within our own actions before seeking to offset our impacts through the purchase of emissions savings achieved by others. As such the Carbon Reduction Institute is delighted that YHA Australia and its members are investigating and funding greenhouse reductions within its own organisation.

Beyond reducing emissions within YHA Australia, the Carbon Reduction initiative has the potential to set an example in the hostel industry and also inspire its members to take further actions to reduce their own footprints.

Located on Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay YHA is architecturally-designed to be environmentally sustainable. An organically grown herb garden is available for the use of guests, and the hostel implements a range of energy and water saving techniques to reduce its impact on the environment.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Just some of the initiatives in place at Apollo Bay YHA include:
  • Solar hot water system supplies heating for the showers.
  • Rainwater tanks irrigate the landscaped gardens and lawns.
  • Water saving devices are fitted on all taps and showerheads. Buckets are supplied for guests to save shower water for the gardens.
  • A passive solar design means that sun penetration is maximised in winter and minimised in summer.

A stylish and friendly eco hostel, the Grampians YHA hostel was architecturally designed to be environmentally sustainable. It features a herb garden, chickens providing free range eggs, and vegetables and fruit are supplied for the use of guests.

Environmental Initiatives

  • These are just some of initiatives on display at the hostel:
  • A passive solar design to maximise winter sun penetration and minimise sunshine into the building in summer.
  • Built with materials including rammed earth, stone, reverse brick veneer, corrugated iron clad walls and burnished concrete floors.
  • To reduce heat loss in winter, glass in the southern walls has been kept to a minimum, and fitted drapes have been installed to reduce night-time heat loss through windows.
  • Reverse-cycle overhead fans installed in main guest lounges.
  • Solar electricity tiles have been installed on the roof. The heat generated in the roof space beneath them can be used to heat the building in winter.

One of the first city accommodation facilities to received Eco-Tourism Australia accreditation, Melbourne Metro YHA has also formalised their environmental commitment through a AAA Tourism Green Stars endorsement of their 4-star rating.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Solar hot water system with ten 440 litre units, each with 3 solar panels. The combined environmental savings of these units equates to around 70 tonnes of greenhouse gas. The system generates 75% of the hot water used at the hostel.
  • A comprehensive recycling system in the kitchens to help guests recycle their paper, plastic containers, glass bottles and aluminium cans.
  • Electronic thermostats installed on all heating devices that power-off the system once the temperature reaches the programmed level.
  • All 52 toilets now operate dual flush cisterns, with an aim to reduce sewerage disposal water consumption by up to two-thirds.

One of the first city accommodation facilities to received Eco-Tourism Australia accreditation, Melbourne Oasis YHA has also formalised their environmental commitment through a AAA Tourism Green Stars endorsement of their 3.5-star rating.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Solar hot water system with ten 440 litre units, each with 3 solar panels. The combined environmental savings of these units equates to around 21 tonnes of greenhouse gas. The system generates 75% of the hot water used at the hostel.
  • Individual room heaters are on a timer system that only allows use between 4pm and 10am.
  • A comprehensive recycling system in the kitchens to help guests recycle their paper, plastic containers, glass bottles and aluminium cans.

Environmental Initiatives

  • Some of the initiatives on display at the hostel include:
  • 32 solar collectors on the roof and an insulated tank farm holding 11,000 litres of water heats all hot water for guests. No carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases are produced in this process.
  • Lower energy level lighting system and low voltage lamps have reduced the lighting load by 50%.
  • Ensuite bathrooms have been upgraded with water efficient showerheads, taps and dual-flush toilet systems. Water usage in the hostel has been reduced by 40%.
