Indigenous Art in Australia
The First Nations people of Australia have artistic processes that are central to their identity and culture which date back through an unimaginably long period. There are an increasing number of emerging Indigenous artists who continue to tell the rich stories of human migration, the oceans and archipelagos of this vast continent, through their artworks and storytelling today.
When travelling around Australia, we recommend that you take every opportunity you can to experience the vast array of rock art that captures the totemic icons and visual design of local Indigenous people as well as visiting galleries where you can discover many great contemporary Indigenous artists who incorporate the 'Dreaming' elements into their works.
YHA encourages you to support local Indigenious artists though ensuring any art you purchase is being sourced and sold ethically. Take the time to ask about the providence of the work, the management of the gallery (preferably Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander owned) and don't be afraid to ask direct questions about the commission agreements that are in place with the artist.

Darren Charlwood (a proud Wiradjuri man) recently brought his art to YHA Blue Mountains and shared his cultural knowledge through talks, a weaving workshop and a bushwalk as part of our Indigenous Artist in Residence series.
Meet the artist: Rubyrose Bancroft
As part of our Indigenous Artist in Residence series, Rubyrose Bancroft (a young and highly talented Bundjalung woman from Northern New South Wales) brought her art to YHA Sydney Harbour in August 2022.
Meet the artist: Wanita Lowe
Dunghutti Biripi artist, Cultural arts teacher and cultural educator Wanita Lowe shared her art practices, both traditional and contemporary, at YHA Byron Bay in November 2023, drawing on her personal culture, stories and life experiences.
Boomalli
Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative's primary goal is to promote NSW Aboriginal Artists. Located in Leichhardt, they host major exhibitions as well as solo exhibitions for their Artist members.
