Meet the Artist: Rubyrose Bancroft
The young and highly talented Bundjalung artist from Northern New South Wales, Rubyrose Bancroft stayed at the YHA Sydney Harbour in August 2022 to share the creative and cultural experience of developing her artwork with our guests.
Rubyrose worked in the reception area of YHA Sydney Harbour from late morning till the evening. She was keen to discuss her artistic process and cultural background with our guests and of course the YHA team members who came by to say hello.
We are really excited to be working with someone so young and so talented. At the age of 16, Rubyrose was a finalist in the Blacktown City Art Prize 2015. She was featured in Time Out Magazine's 2016 Forty under 40 article, identifying young people of influence and not only does she work in paint and multi-media she has also been commissioned to produce unique artwork designs by Australian Indigenous Mentoring experience (AIME) and Budgy Smuggler swimwear.
All of this and she only completed her Higher School Certificate in 2017! Not to mention being awarded her Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School in 2020, where her Major work '7 Deadly Sins' was acquired. She has also exhibited in the Hobiennale Festival at Moonah Arts Centre in Tasmania and she was also involved in a project with NRMA which saw her artwork Ripple Effect II featured on a billboard acknowledging Bundjalung Country.
The team at Sydney Harbour hosted a 'Meet the Artist' event where one of her multi-media artworks was on display, as well as a Q&A with Rubyrose.
This event was part of YHA's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our goal is to deeply embed cultural learning throughout the YHA network and to share it with our community of travellers, Rubyrose Bancroft was the first of what will hopefully be many of our Indigenous Artists in Residence events.
Rubyrose Bancroft was introduced to YHA by the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative art space in Leichhardt which is an Aboriginal owned gallery dedicated to supporting New South Wales artists. Boomalli is a Co-operative with over 60 artist members based in Sydney and regionally.
YHA is proud to partner with Boomalli.
