Murwillumbah is a cyclist’s paradise. The famous Northern Rivers Rail Trail begins in Murwillumbah. You can cycle or walk along 24 km of rail trail, passing by The Tweed Regional Gallery & the Margaret Ollie Art Center, through bushland, farmland, small villages and a tunnel containing glow worms. The Rail Trail was recently voted to be in the top 10% of worldwide attractions. There are also 14 cycle routes within the area and a mountain bike park 15 km from Riverside Backpackjers (Murwillumbah).

Enjoy the spectacular views of Mt Warning and view one of the world's largest volcanic craters from the balcony. Paddle a kayak in a nearby tranquil creek viewing wild ducks and native animals - BYO or hire a canoe. Visit the Margaret Olley Art Centre, Murwillumbah's refurbished museum and the World Heritage Rainforest Centre. Try unusual delights at Tropical Fruit World or go bushwalking in nearby National Parks. Join a river cruise, stand up paddle board or sightseeing tour. Excellent Thai, Mexican, Indian, pizza or good old fashioned pub grub can be found at over 33 cafes and restaurants close to your Murwillumbah accommodation. Enjoy live jazz, country, blues and rock bands in town.

Things to do in Murwillumbah

  1. Visit the outstanding, Margaret Olley Art Centre, just 2.5 km from YHA.
  2. BYO or hire a kayak and explore the tranquil Tweed River and its tributaries.
  3. BYO or a hire bicycle to cycle the scenic Tweed Valley on the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.
  4. Discover your new favourite item at the markers and finders' market on every 3rd Saturday from 9am-2pm.
  5. In your car explore the region's numerous National Parks. Natural Bridge, Springbrook, Mebbin, Cougals.
  6. Uncover the History of Murwillumbah with the 1.5km Murwillumbah Town Centre Heritage Walk.
  7. Be gob-smacked at the amazing sunsets over the river and mountains from your hostel. Don't forget your camera.
  8. Stroll across the road is the council's heated swimming pool perfect for hot and cold days.
  9. Don't forget sunscreen!
