Not to boast, but at YHA Fremantle Prison, we’re committed to sustainability in all we do, so much that we recycled a building! We Participate in Earth Hour each year, are growing a drought resistant garden and want to see a more sustainable future. Some of our commitments include:

Energy Efficiency:
- Low energy motion-sensor lighting: no need for lights on in empty rooms
- Active promotion of public transport options – the easiest way to reduce your carbon footprint!

Waste Minimisation:
- Recycling stations in rooms, kitchens, common areas and office areas. We recycle anything from printer cartridges or our paper, to tinnies of beer and plastic containers, light bulbs, old batteries and even clothing!
- Swap shelves give second hand goods, clothing, food and more, new life
- No plastic bottles or plastic bags on site, we only sell reusable bottles and cups, with refill stations across the hostel
- Our herb garden will spice up your life with zero plastic waste in the process!

Water Saving:
- Our showers and taps are 3 stars! 3 WELS stars for efficiency that is, our toilets? Dual flush for ultimate bathroom efficiency
- Get educated with signage encouraging guests to take shorter showers, turn off taps while brushing teeth, report leaks to become a sustainability superstar!
- Automated irrigation for our garden turned off in winter to reduce water use
