Sustainability practices
YHA Albany is committed to reducing its environmental footprint through a mix of conservation and sustainable practices and services.
Initiatives include:
Energy/Greenhouse Gas Reduction:
- Low energy lighting used throughout the hostel and signage to encourage guests to switch lights off when not in use
- Signage in rooms to encourage guests to turn off the lights and heaters
- Motion sensor lighting in bathrooms and outside entrance doors. Controlled lighting in main corridors on a timer
- Low energy light bulbs used throughout property plus abundant natural lighting
- Restricted air-conditioning on a timer
- Bathroom exhaust operates only when required
- Unused computers and monitors turned off at night
- Promote the use of public transport
- Bike rental with free bike storage
- Participate in Earth Hour
Waste Minimisation:
- Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, batteries, clothing and printer cartridges
- Have a dedicated area for guests to leave things they don’t need but other people might
- Free food shelves in kitchen
- Use partially recycled paper in office
- Stopped selling bottled water in vending machines
- Grow a herb garden for guest use
- Biodegradable cleaning products
Water Saving Measures:
- Water efficient taps and showers
- Dual flush toilets
- Signage in bathrooms encouraging guests to minimise water usage
Indoor Environmental Quality Measures:
- Building design with open walkways and central voids for natural light and ventilation
- Smoking only permitted in one area of the garden
