Soak up the sights and sounds of Surfers Paradise

Trendy shops, lively cafés and al fresco restaurants line the bustling beachside haven of Surfers Paradise. With white sand on one side and a soaring skyline on the other, a stroll along the esplanade never disappoints — and it won’t run your wallet dry.
Along this famous strip, it’s not uncommon to stumble upon beach volleyball tournaments, international surf competitions and live music performances. Cruise through Soul Boardwalk to the shopping precinct on Cavill Avenue, where you can grab a cheap bite to eat while you watch the quirky street performers.
Looking for a free, scenic way to see the coast? Cycle, run or walk along the Gold Coast Oceanway, which starts at Main Beach in the North and continues through Surfers Paradise for 36 kilometres to Point Danger.
Enjoy the Gold Coast's best beaches

It’s no secret that the Gold Coast is the place to go for all things surf and sun. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or you just want to soak up some rays, these stretches of coast are one of the Gold Coast’s biggest drawcards — and they won’t cost you a thing!
Beyond the buzz of the iconic Surfers Paradise Beach, you’ll find more relaxing sweeps of sand at neighboring Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach.
Just a 10-minute drive away is Main Beach. White-capped waves roll into shore here, and it’s popular among surfers for its open shore break. Head south for some more world-class swells at the pandanus-framed Burleigh Heads Beach, and the legendary man-made point break known as The Superbank.
Not quite ready to rip it up with the pros? The rolling waves of Currumbin Alley and the sheltered Rainbow Bay tend to be more gentle and beginner-friendly.
Hike through the hinterland

The Gold Coast is more than just beautiful beaches. Venture beyond the coastline, and you’ll discover a labyrinth of trails that traverse ancient forests, waterfalls and caves in the hinterland’s national parks. Best of all, entry is free!
Lamington National Park is home to emerald-green canopies, and gems like O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk, a dramatic 180-metre-long bridge suspended in the rainforest — another free attraction.
About a 50-minute drive from Surfers Paradise is Springbrook National Park, where you’ll find ethereal glow-worm caves at Natural Bridge, glimmering waterfalls like the Cougal Cascades and lookouts with panoramic views.
Whether you opt for a short walk or an all-day trek, it’s a scenic and cash-free way to spend the day. So lace up your hiking boots, get your heart rate up and head to the hinterland!
Get an adrenaline fix

What better place than the Gold Coast to get your adrenaline pumping — and it doesn’t have to be expensive. From riding the bends on a roller coaster to free falling through the air or gliding on the water, there’s no shortage of daredevil adventures.
Thrills, chills and heart-pounding fun await at the Goldie's best theme parks. While tickets may seem steep, make the most of your time by grabbing a variety pass and visiting during weekdays or off-peak seasons.
For those seeking an aerial adventure without the sky-high price tag, consider indoor skydiving at iFLY Gold Coast. It’s an exhilarating sensation and much more affordable than jumping from a plane.
If you prefer water sports, you’ll find plenty of affordable stand up paddleboard, kayak and parasail rentals in Surfers Paradise.
Plan a picnic on Burleigh Hill

Dreamy views, lush greenery and good vibes — Burleigh Hill is the perfect picnic location and a favorite spot for admiring the sunset.
Grab some cheap takeaway or snacks and drop a picnic blanket on the grassy slope. After finishing up your food, take a leisurely stroll across to Oceanview Walk in Burleigh Head National Park.
What better way to embrace the laid-back Gold Coast lifestyle while you save a pretty penny!
Binge on budget-friendly bites

Despite its glitz and glamour, the Gold Coast packs a punch for cheap eats. Head to Miami Marketta night market on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday for affordable street food, from handmade arancini to Turkish gözleme and everything in between. Even better — there’s free live music!
For some more delectable nosh, opt for wallet-friendly meals like tapas specials at the trendy Lucia; the Pizza Party at Southport’s Mozza Mozza; or Taco Tuesday at the lively El Camino Cantina, a standout spot in Surfers.
Troll for treasures at the markets

The Gold Coast is a great place for shopping — and you don’t have to bust your budget to nab some good finds. At the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, pick up some handmade jewellry or artisan coffee while you take in the ocean views and music performances. Or, on the first and third Sunday of every month, head to The Village Markets in Burleigh Heads, a hive of boho artwork, vintage clothing and unique homewares.
For more upscale shopping, jump on one of the free shuttles and head to Pacific Fair, an indoor/outdoor mall, where you can browse the upscale stores amid shimmering pools and potted palms.
Hit up the Gold Coast clubs

When it comes to after-hours fun, the Gold Coast takes the cake. Surfers Paradise is the hub for all things nightlife, and going out can be affordable, especially if you have a couple of pre-drinks and plan your transport ahead of time.
If you’re in the mood for DJs, dancing and drinks in the single figures, head to Cocktails Nightclub on Orchid Avenue — it’s one of the most popular and longest-running clubs on the Goldie. If you’re looking for something more laid-back, Cali Beach Club is a great option, pumping out tunes Friday through Sunday.
Entry prices are variable, but arriving as close to the opening time as possible (usually 9 pm) gives you the best shot at saving on cost. You might even score free entry!
Mingle with other travellers at YHA Coolangatta
Perfectly poised in the hub of the trendy arts precinct and just a 10-minute walk from the airport, YHA Coolangatta makes a convenient base. Check out local galleries and exhibitions, browse art festivals and immerse yourself in the region’s buzzy vibe.
The property also has bikes available for hire — great for exploring. And if you’re looking to catch some waves, hire one of the property’s surfboards and wander across to Kirra beach.
After exploring the surrounds, hang out with other travellers at BBQ night, make a splash in the pool or unleash your competitive side in the games room.
Bonus travel tip: Public transport on the Gold Coast is super cheap and easy, so you'll have no problems getting around. Just grab a go card for discounted fares and hop aboard the G:link tram system, which connects most of the key areas.
