YHA Byron Bay

YHA Byron Bay and Sustainability

YHA Byron Bay is invested in creating a more sustainable future, together. We aim to reduce our footprint through more sustainable practices. Some of our commitments include:

Energy Efficiency_Green.png

Energy Efficiency:

  • Hot water powered by the Sun! Boosted by natural gas, our solar heating was completed with partial funding lead by YHA’s Sustainable Hostel Fund guest contributions and has already saved over 10% on emissions since 2011.
  • Low energy lighting used in some areas of the hostel
  • Promotion of public transport, including bike hire and free bike storage - the easiest way to be eco-friendly
  • Travelling for work? We carbon offset all our work flights

Water Saving:

  • Our showers are 3 star! Well, WELS 3 stars for water efficiency, with 4 stars for taps. Our toilets? Dual flush for ultimate bathroom efficiency
  • Get educated with signage in bathrooms and kitchens encouraging guests to minimise water usage
  • Front loader washing machines
  • Rainwater tank on site used to water our drought-resistant gardens, hooray for water saving!

Waste Minimalisation_Green.png

Waste Minimisation:

  • Recycling stations in kitchens, common areas and office areas to recycle anything from printer cartridges or our 100% recycled paper, to tinnies of beer and plastic containers, dead batteries and even organic waste!
  • No plastic bottles or plastic bags on site, we only sell reusable
